General Counsel
IIX Global
Singapore
I am counsel in sustainable finance to banks, foundations, impact funds and corporates, and general counsel to family offices, founders and private investment firms.
I have helped structure, close and govern more than US$30 billion in cross-border transactions, from Latham & Watkins to the United Nations Global Compact (as Head of Policy and Legal) to senior in-house roles in renewable energy and impact investing. I have been counsel to Impact Investment Exchange (IIX) since its first day: seventeen years advising one board, one investment committee and one management team as they built a global impact finance platform.
My work today runs along three lines:
1. Specialist counsel in green and sustainable finance to banks, foundations, impact funds and corporates: Green Climate Fund accreditation, IFRS S1 and S2 and national sustainability reporting regimes.
2. General counsel, fractional or full-time, to family offices, PE/VC managers and fund platforms: investment structuring, SPVs and co-investment vehicles, fund formation and governance, portfolio company support, regulatory engagement in Singapore and Hong Kong, and the disputes that follow when a deal goes wrong.
3. Personal counsel to founders, principals and high net worth individuals: minority stakes and accredited-investor structures, family governance, philanthropy and impact commitments, and asset tracing and enforcement across jurisdictions.
These mandates run through Birch Court, the advisory practice I founded; Dan Tan Law Corporation, where my US-qualified work sits; and IIX, where I continue to be General Counsel overseeing a small team.
At the UN Global Compact and the Principles for Responsible Investment I drafted foundational governance documents that still guide those initiatives. As Head of ESG at a NASDAQ-listed solar company in Singapore, I led a programme recognised by Corporate Knights (Global Top 25, first in Singapore), the UN Global Compact APEX Award and the ASrIA Award for Best Human Rights Reporting in Asia.
Recognition includes the inaugural Legal 500 Green GC Powerlist for Southeast Asia, a Fulbright Scholarship, the CFA Institute Sustainable Investing Certificate, and board seats at GAIL Asia-Pacific and Inclusive Development International. I teach sustainable investing and fiduciary duty at the Wealth Management Institute and Singapore Management University.
