Part 9 of 9: Lessons GCs wish they’d known earlier

Building teams and extending impact

In the final part of our series, 9 Lessons GCs Wish They’d Known Earlier, we explore perhaps the most enduring lesson of all: the true measure of legal leadership is not what you achieve yourself, but the capability you build in others.

9. Building teams and extending impact

For many lawyers, success is initially measured by individual performance.

The focus is on becoming the expert – the person who solves the toughest problems, negotiates the most complex agreements, and provides the answers when others cannot.

But as General Counsel step into leadership roles, the definition of success begins to change.

The most effective legal leaders recognise that their impact cannot be measured solely by the advice they give or the decisions they influence.

Instead, it is reflected in the strength of the team they build and the confidence they create across the wider organisation.

One of the biggest transitions for any legal leader is learning to let go.

Rather than feeling the need to own every issue personally, experienced GCs understand the importance of empowering others, creating opportunities for growth, and trusting their teams to deliver.

“Build a strong team, mentor them and vacate the portfolio for them so that you can take up newer roles and responsibility.”
— Amar Sundram, General Counsel – Sr. VP Legal & Chief Compliance Officer, NEC Corporation India Pvt Ltd (India)

Developing others is not simply about transferring work.

It is about creating capacity, supporting progression, and giving talented people the opportunity to assume greater responsibility. By enabling members of the legal team to step forward, General Counsel can devote more attention to strategic priorities while preparing others to become future leaders.

But building an effective legal function requires more than mentoring and delegation alone.

It requires assembling a team with complementary strengths, diverse perspectives, and a shared commitment to supporting the business.

“You need a ‘dream team’ of lawyers who not only understand the business but also bring diverse perspectives and expertise.”
— Oscar Zarhi, Group General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, Grupo Elecmetal (Chile)

The strongest legal teams are those where expertise is shared, different viewpoints are encouraged, and individuals are empowered to contribute their unique experience.

In today’s increasingly complex business environment, no single lawyer can possess every answer.

The most successful General Counsel recognise that diversity of thought, experience, and expertise leads to better decisions, stronger collaboration, and greater resilience.

Ultimately, leadership is about multiplication rather than accumulation.

It is about creating an environment where people grow, where knowledge is shared, and where legal becomes a function that enables the business rather than depending on one individual.

Looking back across this series, the lessons shared by legal leaders around the world point to a common evolution.

Success as a General Counsel is no longer defined solely by legal excellence.

It is shaped by business acumen, relationships, communication, proactive leadership, emotional intelligence, adaptability, integrity, and – ultimately – the ability to build people and extend your impact through them.

That is the legacy of great legal leadership.

Key Takeaway:
The most successful General Counsel don’t build successful careers – they build successful teams.

This concludes our 9-part series: Lessons GCs Wish They’d Known Earlier

Over the past nine articles, legal leaders from around the world have shared the lessons they wish they had learned earlier in their careers. Together, their insights paint a clear picture of how the role of the General Counsel has evolved.

Today’s most effective GCs are far more than exceptional lawyers. They are trusted advisers, commercial thinkers, communicators, relationship builders, change leaders, mentors, and guardians of culture and integrity.

Perhaps the greatest lesson of all is this: the lasting impact of a General Counsel is not measured by the legal advice they give, but by the people they develop, the teams they build, and the organisations they help shape.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their insights and experiences to this series.
